When 38% of people stop exploring a website if the content or layout are unattractive, you can’t afford to have a website that isn’t wowing visitors. Websites can be an incredible marketing tool to show off your brand and convert visitors into customers — no one wants to lose a potential 38% of them!

Don’t worry, we’re here to help. We’ve put together the key dos and don’ts of web design.

Do

Keep your branding consistent

The overall look, the banner, the colours — this should all remain consistent throughout your website’s pages. Consistency across the board will have a positive impact on UX and usability.

Design easy to use navigation

This is the foundation of usability. Ensuring that your website is easy to navigate is crucial – users need to be able to find what they’re looking for! If they can’t get around your website with ease, they will look elsewhere.

Provide a good mobile experience

Mobile internet usage saw an uptick of 10% in 2019, surpassing desktop usage. So, it’s increasingly important that your website remains consistent in content across desktop, mobile, tablet, etc. and looks good on different screen sizes.

Don’t

Overwhelm the page with text

Text itself is great. Text isn’t the issue — a block of text that is sure to put the user off is. Avoid overwhelming the user by using headings, bullet points, and quotes. The goal is to integrate the text into an accessible layout — it needs to be scannable! You can also navigate the user towards where you want them to go by blocking out certain bits of text.

Use too many colours on your website

Too many colours all over the place is not a settling environment and probably doesn’t convey the message you want to about your brand. Think about what you want your customers to feel and what colour best suits that.

Forget to take it for a test drive!

Hooray — you’ve designed your site! Now it’s time to test it. Ensure this is done across multiple devices, internet browsers, even locations. Create varying scenarios that could affect the usability of the website to spot any performance issues or bugs (before your visitors do!)
